Implement History Tracking for Your App Using SQL Server Change Data Capture

Speaker: Dustan Roed, Software & Data Engineer Omnitech

Summary: Let’s say you have an application that you are using with Entity Framework Code First classes and context. Then the request comes in…. “Can you implement some sort of data auditing or history tracking? We want to know when records were added, changed and deleted, as well as the details of the changes.” You think to yourself, “Yeah, okay, all that needs to be done is implement a new history table and triggers for every table in the database that we need to track history for.” Then you brain is flooded with other considerations, such as: • Do not forget about the triggers, and make sure nobody else forgets also. • The need for managing the growth of the history tables and periodically pruning them. • Coming up with the development pattern to handle this new history tracking paradigm. Getting light-headed or weak in the knees yet? Fear not trepid developer, as there is information that may help make implementing history a little more straight forward.
